Jean Westmoreland, 97, of De Leon, passed peacefully from this life Saturday, April 5, 2025. She was born May 3, 1927, in De Leon, to Chester Clyde Setzler and Alma Park Setzler. Jean married Euel H. Westmoreland on November 16, 1946. They enjoyed a loving marriage until his passing December 16, 1997.
Jean was raised in De Leon and graduated from De Leon High School at the age of 17. She was a dedicated De Leon Bearcat always. As long as she was able, she would not miss a Bearcat football game and can be vividly remembered as a loud and proud fan, always in her Bearcat maroon. She also loved baseball and played shortstop in softball post high school in a semi-professional league. Jean enjoyed quilting and handmade many sacred family heirlooms for her family to treasure. She was a long-time devoted member of St. Joe Baptist Church. She loved her church family dearly and was always looking for a way to serve the Lord through her church involvement. She was always one of the first to volunteer to cook and clean up for church functions. Jean was a wonderful cook, and loved making meals for the holidays, special occasions, or just a normal weeknight supper for her family. She also enjoyed canning. She was a true homemaker; always providing for her family. Outside of the home, she was employed as a public school bus driver and secretary for over twenty-five years. Jean had a true servant heart and would do for others in need without ever wanting any credit for the kind deed. Above all else, Jean loved the Lord and her family. She was loyal, encouraging, kind, patient, friendly, and dependable. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her son, Harland Westmoreland and wife, Nita; daughter, Deborah Lee; brother, Donald Setzler and wife, Thelma; sister, Linda Hall; grandchildren, Scott Westmoreland and wife, Laura, Tracey Griffin and husband, Scott; Travis Montague and wife, Kristin, Trey Lee and wife, Karin, Clay Westmoreland and wife, C.J., and Jesse Lee and wife, Amber; great-grandchildren, Corrine, Brittany, Mykaela, Joshua, Madison, Rosie, Katie, Trinity, Jacob, Kennedy, Gwen, and Theodore; great-great grandchildren, Ryan, Jase, and Ezra; sister-in-law, Jeri Setzler; numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband, Euel H. Westmoreland; parents, Chester and Alma Setzler; brothers, Arvil Setzler and wife, Myrnavee, Wayne Setzler, and Velton Setzler and wife, Sondra; sisters, Sonny Daniels and husband, A.D., and Inez Robinson and husband, Fuzzy.
The Westmoreland family received friends for visitation on Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 1-2:00 p.m. at St. Joe Baptist Church. Funeral services celebrating Jean’s life began at 2:00 p.m. with Brother Matt Morton officiating. Graveside committal followed in Oaklawn Cemetery, Gorman. Serving as pallbearers were Scott Westmoreland, Clay Westmoreland, Travis Montague, Trey Lee, Jesse Lee, Josh Westmoreland, and Jacob Westmoreland. Honorary pallbearers were Ryan Ritchie, Jase Ritchie, Ezra Westmoreland, Theo Lee, and Scott Griffin.
