The Big Lake Chamber of Commerce made it official last Thursday voting to cancel the group’s Santa Rita Star Spangled Celebration for this year.

The event was scheduled for July 4th at the Reagan County North Park and was set to feature Whiskey Myers and Kevin Fowler.

“It is with a heavy heart that we have to do this,” Chamber Director Loretta Epperson said. “We held off as long as we could before making a decision. It is in the best interest of everyone involved to cancel it at this point.”

Chamber President J.L. Mankin discussed the possibility of  using the North Park for the celebration with County Judge Jim O’Bryan.

“Judge O’Bryan said he did not see a circumstance where restrictions on the number of people who can gather will be lifted enough to hold such an event,” Mankin said. “I agree. There is no way to have complete control of who comes into the North Park, so there is no way to limit attendance to whatever level is in place at the time.”

The event has brought in around 10,000 people to the North Park in previous years.

“We are working with the bands right now to push them to the 2021 event,” Epperson said. “I feel hopeful it will work out.”

Judge O’Bryan was receptive to the idea of hosting the fireworks display at the North Park as long as everyone in attendance remains in their vehicle.

“We are currently looking for sponsors to help make the fireworks a possibility,” Epperson said. “We know times are tough right now, so we are not asking for large donations. Any little bit will help.”

The Chamber has fireworks planned tentatively for Saturday, July 4th in the North Park. More information will be released as that event draws closer.
