Donald Leon Meroney, 81, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2018 in Big Lake. He was born on July 13, 1936 in Texon, Texas to the late, Royal Stanley and Velma Estelle Barnes Meroney. Donald married Mary Ann Barbee on August 16, 1958 in Sinton, Texas. He graduated from Reagan County High School in 1954 and from the University of Texas at Austin in 1971. His life’s work included becoming a Captain in the United States Army, teaching middle school math for many years in the Austin area and Big Lake, welding and crop-dusting. He had a life-long love of flying.  Donald has been a member of First Baptist Church, Big Lake since 1980. Donald was a proud member of the Roy Rose American legion, where he was the Big Lake Veterans Contact for over 20 years. He was also a member of the Trailblazers and served on the Big Lake Economic Development board. He was known as a loyal, funny and kind-hearted man. His love of sharing stories with friends and family made him a great historian of the Big Lake and Texon areas as well. Donald will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Meroney; son, Mark Patrick Meroney; brother, Robert Neal Meroney and his wife, Gloria; nephew, Michael Wayne Meroney; cousin, Larry Lynn Spitler; and a host of other relatives and friends.
There was an open time of visitation Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at the First Baptist Church, Big Lake. Rev. Gerald Bastin officiated. Interment followed in the Glen Rest Cemetery with Michael Foster, Carl Baker, Chuck Jones, Larry Mercer, Wayne Smith and Clinton White serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Isom, Tom Byrd and Kelwin Harris. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your charity of choice in Donald’s honor.
